The purpose of your summer homework is to make sure that you continue to read and experience English this summer. According to many experts, when you go without exposure to a language for extended periods of time you lose important skills and vocabulary in that language.

  • To this end, you must find a way to work English into your routine this summer. Below are options for you to choose from. All evidence must be posted on your individual page here on this wiki.

ú June 1 – June 7………. Post an activity and post evidence for having completed that activity
ú June 8 – June14........... Post an activity and post evidence for having completed that activity
ú June 15 – June 21......... Post an activity and post evidence for having completed that activity
ú June 22 – June 28……. Post an activity and post evidence for having completed that activity
ú June 29 – July 5……… Post an activity and post evidence for having completed that activity
ú July 6 – July 12………. Post an activity and post evidence for having completed that activity
ú July 13 – July 19……... Post an activity and post evidence for having completed that activity
ú July 20 – July 26……... Post an activity and post evidence for having completed that activity

1) English Inputs
You have lots of options for how to expose yourself to English this summer. Below are some of the things that you can do.
Remember, each week you must do both an input activity and choose a way to show evidence for having completed that activity.
Read a book
Read the news
Read celebrity blogs
Go to a play or watch a movie
Go to summer camp
Take summer classes
Travel to an English speaking country
Follow world cup news (and see if you can understand a South African accent while you're at it! - good luck!)

2) English Evidence Options
You must do one of the following activities to show evidence of English exposure this summer. Remember to post this on the wikispace like you were shown in May!
  • Create a Podcast

Get together with a few friends or do this by yourself. For a podcast all you need to do is record a conversation about the input activity, with at least 5 minutes of recording per person participating (i.e. 5 minutes if you are doing it alone, 15 if three people are doing in together, etc). This would be great to do if a group of people want to watch a movie together or create a book group and read the same novel.
  • Make Journal Entries

This is best for experiences such as summer courses or going to summer camp. For this assignment, write a journal entry that is a paragraph or two in length relating the story of something interesting that happened to you (must be related to an English input activity). Be sure to be specific and use lots of details; don’t just give a “laundry list” of what you did. Choose one event or occurrence and really describe it!

  • Collect a Photo Essay

Put together a group of photos with captions describing what is happening in the photos. Be sure to specify how this shows English practice (i.e. “This is me in Times Square. I had to ask directions to the subway when we got lost!!!”). You can do this on an on-line photo program like Flickr or Slide and insert them as a widget. Check out the help videos to find out how to do this!

  • Write a Personal Response

Write a paragraph or two responding to a reading or observation activity. Focus on what you like and why, what you don’t like and why, and what it makes you think about. Think about the things we talk about in English class and do things like making text connections, identifying themes, etc.

  • Write a Creative Story

This should be at least two paragraphs and be your own creative work. This could be fan-fiction, taking characters that you like from a book or movie and putting them in a new situation or setting. Or it could be an original short story with your own characters and settings.

  • Draw and Write a Comic Book

For the artistic student, create a comic book, autobiographical or otherwise. You can create this digitally or draw it by hand and scan it in.

  • Think Something Up!!!

Be creative and come up with your own idea to demonstrate your English use this summer. Drop an me e-mail or leave a comment on my discussion page to make sure that it meets the requirements for the assignment.
